The star has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

He was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his new release his work was declared the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 small stages across the UK.

The money helped spaces that were facing possible closure due to difficulties arising from water damage, fires and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces received funding support in upgrading infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from performances in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his award winnings to worthy causes.

In they received the trophy in 1996 for their album their work, lead singer the singer declared that the act would contribute their winnings to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her prize across multiple organizations, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," she told the media.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the local youth club that supported their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients the group contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked singer Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning touched another person's life."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected two grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under local control.

The first in Southampton and the other in that location were acquired under the community ownership program, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the properties.
