No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
