Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
