"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The sender also desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to make music."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global following.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
